The Michael K. Lawler papers consist of personal correspondence, drawings and official papers from 1819 to 1884 including documents concerning Gallatin County property and the Illinois Bar admission. Also in the collection are letters, hand-drawn maps, drawings from the Mexican War, a handwritten poem, "The Battle of [Monterrey]," by George W. Patten (the "poet laureate" of the Army), an autograph endorsement signed by Ulysses S. Grant, October 13, 1861, and three record books. Postwar letters include an unsuccessful effort to gain a patronage position under President Grant. There is also one folder of prewar documents concerning the family of wife Elizabeth Crenshaw.

Michael K. Lawler was born in Ireland and raised near Equality in Gallatin County, Illinois. Admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1844 he worked as a farmer and later joined the army as a Captain serving in the Mexican War. He continued his career in the army, serving as a Colonel, was wounded at Fort Donelson, Tennessee, was court-martialed and later acquitted for disciplining his men, received a promotion to Brigadier general in November, 1862 and served in the Vicksburg, Mississippi campaign in 18...
